I didn’t know that daffodils (narcissus) came in any colour except yellow, until the spring we moved to my husband’s grandparents’ farm. Grandpa had planted groups of daffodils that began to poke up as the snow melted, and the buds that emerged were far more beautiful than I expected: some were pure white, some had pink centres, and others had multi-stemmed heads of miniature blooms that smelled exactly like lilacs. I have since added thousands of bulbs to my collection, with dozens of varieties in white, peach, pink, yellow and cream tones—each gorgeous. Each one still reminds me of Grandpa.
